Sir Michael Wilshaw, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills
On the 15th December at 4pm, in the Macmillan Room of Portcullis House, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Education will be addressed by Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills, Sir Michael Wilshaw.
Sir Michael was appointed to his role in January 2012. Prior to joining Ofsted, he had a distinguished career as a teacher for 43 years, 26 of these as a headteacher in London secondary schools.
With several major education reforms since Sir Wilshaw last addressed the Group in 2013, we look forward to hearing an update on Ofsted’s perspective on national curriculum reforms and other plans to raise educational attainment.
The new Parliament has already signalled further adjustments in Education policy, following the enormous changes implemented in the last five years. The Group will have an opportunity to hear Sir Michael’s thoughts on the Government’s coasting schools policy as well as other measures included in the Education and Adoption Bill and how the departmental savings required by the Treasury will impact on children’s attainment throughout their school career.
Following recent announcements from Nicky Morgan on the subject, the Group will also be able to discuss with Sir Michael changes to Key Stage 1 testing, as well as the Government’s aim to have 90% of children studying ‘EBacc’ subjects.
Ofsted has recently undergone major changes, including the introduction of a common inspection framework for all early years settings, and new short inspections for schools and academies that were judged good at their last full inspections. Additionally, the Ofsted workforce is undergoing significant revision, with Ofsted now contracting directly with its inspectors. We look forward to hearing what impact these changes are having at this early stage of their implementation.
