On the afternoon of Monday 18 December, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Education will be addressed by the National Director of Education, Sean Harford. Mr Harford was appointed to his role in September 2015, having also previously been appointed Her Majesty’s Inspector in 2003. Prior to joining Ofsted, he had a distinguished career as a teacher and senior leader in a school in the East of England.
With a new Chief Inspector in place, we look forward to hearing an update on Ofsted’s perspective on the national curriculum and other plans to enhance educational attainment and social mobility. While the new Parliament is yet to signal any major adjustments in education policy, Ofsted has identified some areas for improvement. The Group will have an opportunity to hear Mr Harford’s thoughts on the national curriculum and ‘teaching to the test’, as well as the narrowing of courses for lower-attaining pupils. Following recent announcements from Justine Greening on the subject, the Group will also be able to discuss with Mr Harford the national funding formula reforms.
